When you do anything on a regular basis, there is always a chance that you will experience periods of boredom. When someone is getting bored running, this can lead to a lack of motivation and missed sessions or even worse, giving up all together. But how do you get the spark back and rejuvenate your interest in this wonderful pastime called running?
Here are a few tips to put the spice back into your running: -
1. Keep A Training Log
Every time you go for a run, write down how far you ran and for how long. Log down the route you took and how you felt during the run, where you tired or comfortable and did you really push yourself? Keeping a training log is a great way to keep your interest levels high, as your log may highlight things about your run that you can change. It will also serve as a record to show you just how far you have come during your running journey, which can be a great source of motivation.
2. Crank Up The Intensity
If your runs are feeling a bit mundane or stale, then inject a little extra pace with some sprints or high intensity running intervals. Challenge yourself a little more by running up some hills regularly and really push yourself to the limit. A more intense workout will really break the boredom.
3. Run Against The Clock
Running against the clock can really add some purpose to your run, so why not take a stopwatch with you? Firstly plan how long you want to run for, lets say for example that you are going to run for 1 hour. Now pick a location that is roughly about 30 minutes from the start of your run, and time how long it takes to get to it. Now on the way back you can aim to better that time. You may start to tire on the second half of the run, so you will really have to dig deep. This will ensure you put in the maximum effort for the whole run, just make sure you warm up before you start the clock and a warm down after you stop it.
4. Run With A Mate Or Club
If you normally run alone, then why not consider running with a friend? Having someone who can talk to you and encourage you, can be very inspiring. If none of your friends are into running, you could always join a local running club.
5. Train For An Event
Why not enter a marathon or half-marathon, this will give you something to focus your training on. Aim to beat your previous best time and earn some money for a worthy cause at the same time. If a long race is beyond your current fitness levels, there are plenty of fun runs and 5k races to enter.
So if you are getting bored with running, try one of the above strategies to keep motivated when running. Add a little edge to your sessions and keep on running.
